Bacon-wrapped jalapeños and water chestnuts recipe

Blog_Bacon_JalapenosCanapés are brilliant. They’re perfect for feeding a group of people, they look adorable, and because they’re small you can try lots of different things. Our recipe for bacon-wrapped jalapeños and water chestnuts is quick, easy and mouth-wateringly good.

12 streaky bacon rashers, cut in half widthways
12 Kingfisher whole water chestnuts
1 sprinkle brown sugar
12 fresh jalapeño peppers, deseeded
25g cream cheese
3 tbsp chilli sauce or chutney, for serving

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan/Gas Mark 6.
  1. Cut the bacon rashers in half widthways and lay them on a baking sheet. Sprinkle a little brown sugar over them.
  1. Deseed the jalapeños and fill the insides with cream cheese.
  1. Place them on top of half the rashers, and place a chestnut on top of the other half (cut the chestnuts in half if they’re particularly large). Roll up and secure with a cocktail stick.
  1. Bake in the oven for 20 mins, or until crisp. Serve with chilli sauce or chutney for dipping.

Have a Happy New Year, everyone.

New Year Cheer…

Another Christmas has zoomed by and so it’s on to cold, miserable January with all its cheery promise of frugal nights in front of the box, fitness DVDs for pets and sleety rain…. Happy New Year!

But seriously, come on, ‘tis the season for making life-changing resolutions and us lot here at Ocado think we can help. We’ve just unveiled a special Health & Wellbeing event on the site, which means a handy one-stop shop (within your main Ocado shop – just log in and click on the banner) for all of those things that can help coax out the ‘new you’ for 2011.

Whether you’re trying to quit smoking, shift the extra pud, or banish those irritatingly persistent cold and flu germs (I’m two of the three…) then our new microsite should have all the ideas. There’s a wide range of skincare, detox drink, sports nutrition and healthy low-fat food products on there; not to mention some decent savings – see we’re aiming to ease mind and body….

I’ll be honest with you – there’s two gyms within a 500-metre radius of Ocado HQ and yet here I am typing this blog and still wolfing down the leftover office choccy – if you’re like me, then our January ‘event’ really is a simple, super-quick ‘resolution solution’.

Best of luck with it!

A new look for the New Year

Welcome to the new-look Ocado website! You may have read my post about the first roll-out of our new design (see ‘A new webshop‘) in November. Well, we spent the next few weeks fine-tuning, following loads of great feedback from the first set of customers to use the new website. Thank you to everyone who was involved and gave us feedback – we read every single email, tweet and post about the site as we developed it. And, excitingly, we rolled it out to everyone else earlier this week.

So, what’s new? Well, quite a lot. Have a look in detail “here“. We changed the look and feel of the product navigation, with a scroll-over bar at the top of the Shop and a list of options on the right hand side. The trolley now sits at the top of the page, and ‘shelf view’ means you can look at products as if they were on a supermarket shelf, so it’s much quicker to spot the item you’re after and for savvy bargain-hunters to compare value. You can also opt to sort products by price, and there’s a handy list of icons to simplify the information shown.

And frankly, that’s just for starters! Have a play around with the website to see all the adjustments and tweaks – we’re confident that you’ll love it even more than the old one. Yes, change can be off-putting, but we think with all the new features you’ll find shopping with us easier than ever.

If you have any feedback, we’d love to hear it. Just email us at

Have fun with the website, and happy New Year!
