New Zealand storms it…

New Zealand flagSpain might well have beaten Holland in the World Cup final last weekend but it was New Zealand that romped to victory in Ocado’s inaugural World Recipe Challenge. Well… customer Natalie Locherer.

Winner Natalie entered her Kiwi, Lime & Ginger Cheesecake recipe ( on behalf of New Zealand way back in May. The dessert waltzed past hundreds of entries into the qualifying stages of the Challenge where, alongside customer recipes for every other World Cup nation, it appeared in Ocado’s fully-searchable recipe library ready for tasty competition.

We totalled up unique customer visits to each recipe page over the course of the footy and, quite frankly, Natalie thrashed everyone. Well done you! Cheesecake was very much the star player. Yum.

And no, before you ask, England (Rhubarb & Custard Ice Cream) didn’t do any better here. The US, Algeria and Slovenia were all out-played it in the kitchen; the US (Shoofly Pie) finished second in fact, with dishes from Spain (feisty Mountain Stew,) France (peppy Apple Tart) and Australia (delicious Lamingtons) hot on those pastry-base Kiwi heels.

So Natalie wins a ‘Virgin Experience Day’ gift package worth £200, and you lot get to use all the Challenge recipes whenever you feel like it. Trust me, there’s a lot of good cooking on show, much like the rest of our online library – except, of course, when I hit the kitchen, it’s like the England-Germany match all over again. Disastrous!
