Meera Sodha’s Easy vegan banana chocolate muffins with peanut butter

These vegan banana chocolate muffins are guaranteed crowd-pleasers. A popular addition to a Saturday breakfast, Sunday brunch or just as a warming treat on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

For the muffins: 

  • 2 small Ocado bananas, peeled, to get 175g flesh
  • 75ml light olive oil
  • 150ml whole oat milk
  • 1 tbsp Ocado white wine vinegar
  • 250g Ocado plain flour
  • 250g soft light brown sugar
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

Makes 12 Total Time 40 mins

  • 1 tsp Ocado cinnamon 
  • ¼ tsp fine sea salt

For the icing: 

  • 75g non-dairy spread, Meera likes Pure
  • 150g icing sugar 
  • 225g smooth peanut butter, ideally unsalted 
  • 150ml whole oat milk 
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt 


  1. Line a muffin tin with cases and pre-heat the oven to 200ºC/180ºC fan/Gas Mark 6. Why not try this Pyrex muffin tin on Ocado?
  2. Break the bananas into a large bowl and mash to a paste with a fork. To the paste add the olive oil, oat milk and vinegar. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl add the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Whisk to mix then slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix very lightly, so the wet and the dry are just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the 12 cases. Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Take the muffins out of the tin and leave to cool.
  6. While the muffins are baking, make the icing. In a large bowl, cream together the spread and icing sugar, then beat until light and fluffy (an electric whisk would make this easier). 
  7. Add the peanut butter and stir to combine. It will probably go very stiff, so add a little oat milk, one tablespoon at a light, to loosen it slightly. 
  8. Taste, and add salt if your peanut butter is unsalted.  When the muffins have cooled completely, spread the icing evenly over each one.
