12 drinks of Christmas – The Old Fashioned

On the second day of Christmas my true love poured for me… an American classic – bourbon and bitters with a citrus twist. Here’s how you make an Old Fashioned.

Image of the Old Fashioned

  • 60ml bourbon
  • 7.5ml 1:1 sugar syrup (equal parts water and sugar)
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters

Pour ingredients into a glass over ice and stir to dilute. Add more ice and garnish with a twist of orange zest.

We recommend Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whisky (£29.50 for 70cl)

Top tip

Many cocktails call for a sugar syrup, often referred to as ‘simple syrup’ or ‘1:1 sugar syrup’. This is made by mixing equal parts water and caster sugar in a pan and stirring over a medium heat until all the sugar grains are dissolved. Simple!
