We’re big fans of Clippy’s apple-based conserves. So much so, we decided to sit down for a chat with the brain behind the bramleys – founder Clippy McKenna.
So Clippy, tell us a little about your conserves.
We make our conserves with more fresh fruit and less sugar – we always use British apples to reduce the sugar content. We don’t use fruit concentrates or syrups so they always taste really fruity and zingy.
Which jar is the first to be emptied from your food cupboard?
Marmachilli is my fave. It’s hugely versatile with just a kick of chilli so you can still enjoy it on your toast. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, try adding two tablespoons of Marmachilli to a prawn stir fry, and serve with egg noodles.
What’s it like running Clippy’s?
To be honest, it’s great – I get to work with my daughter Rosie and Paul, my fiancé. Rosie was born into Clippy’s: she’s been to buyers’ meetings, tasting sessions in retail stores, and helped to make jam for photo shoots. She’s even helped us pick apples off trees!
Your schedule must be jam-packed (haha!). How do you unwind?
I’m a massive fan of exploring the great outdoors. I’m fortunate enough to live and work with my fiancé Paul who also shares my passion. At weekends we all go camping together – me, Paul, Rosie and our dog Lucy. During the week you can find me on my mountain bike or running the Cheshire plains and canals.
What’s your favourite food match for one of your jams?
Cheese! The Apple & Blueberry Conserve is lush with cream cheese and cinnamon bagels. One of my top five breakfasts!
